Framework for 1-on-1s
Here is my framework for a formal 1-on-1. I prefer asking questions as a way to engage — rather than just making statements. Here are few questions that should serve as a starting point for making relevant conversation and providing constructive feedback.
Not all of them need to be asked each time around and not all of them are relevant for everyone. You may have to change questions based on role.
Apply common sense and your mileage might vary.
Performance
- How are you performing in terms of metrics/objectives ?
- How are you performing in relationship with the rest of the pack ?
- Is your execution of high quality ?
- Is your work happening in a timely fashion ?
- What is preventing you from performing better ?
Management
- Is your team well organized and each task well structured ?
- Do you coach and guide your team regularly ?
- Do you have a clear sense of the best and worse performer ?
- Who doesn’t get enough attention from you ?
- Are you hiring the best folks ?
- Is your team disciplined ?
- Is your team doing anything extraordinary ?
Growth
- Are you learning new things and applying them ?
- How is your career plan progressing ?
- What are you reading ?
Relationships
- How is your Product Manager doing ?
- How are you peers doing ?
- Did you meet someone new at office ?
- Is there someone with whom you find working difficult ?
Closing questions
- Is there something I am doing wrong that you would like me to change ?
- Is there anything else you would like to talk about ?
